Starting fresh
A good QuickBooks Online file starts with a chart of accounts (the list of categories your money gets sorted into) that fits your business, not a generic default. From there I connect your bank and credit card feeds, set up rules so routine transactions sort themselves, turn on GST with the right settings for Alberta, and tidy up your invoice template.
I also set up your customers, suppliers and the products or services you sell, so invoices and bills are quick to create from day one. If you’d like receipt capture, I’ll connect an app like Dext so receipts and bills flow straight into QuickBooks, ready to match.
Moving from spreadsheets, QuickBooks Desktop or Sage
Migration is mostly about getting the starting point right. We decide together how much history to bring over, I set your opening balances so they match your last reconciled statements, and I check the first month in the new file against the old records before we call it done.
I’ve worked in QuickBooks Desktop, Sage, Excel and Google Sheets, so the system you’re leaving won’t be unfamiliar to me.
What Level 2 certification means
Intuit offers QuickBooks Online certification through its ProAdvisor program in two levels. Level 2 covers more advanced work in QuickBooks Online, and holding it means I’ve passed Level 1 as well. I’m Level 2 certified, current as of September 2026, and certification is renewed every year.
In practice, it means your file gets set up by someone who knows QuickBooks Online well, not someone learning it on your books.

Should I switch from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online?
For most small businesses that want to work remotely, connect bank feeds and share access with a bookkeeper, QuickBooks Online is the easier fit. I’ll talk it through with you honestly; if staying put makes more sense, I’ll say so.
What happens to my old data?
We decide together how much history to bring over. Your old file or spreadsheets are kept as they were, and your new file starts from opening balances that match your last reconciled statements.
Can you set up GST in QuickBooks Online?
Yes. I set up GST for Alberta (5% GST, no PST) and match it to your reporting period, so your returns come straight from the books.
Do I need a receipt app like Dext?
You don’t have to use one, but most owners find it much easier than saving paper. You snap a photo, the app reads it and sends it to QuickBooks, and it’s matched to the transaction.
