“You’re reconciled through the end of last month. Two receipts are still missing, and I’ve listed them for you. Your GST for the quarter is on track.”

Catch-up & cleanup bookkeeping

If your books are months (or years) behind, or the numbers in QuickBooks just don’t look right, this is where I start. Cleaning up messy books is honestly my favourite part of the job. I work from your bank and credit card statements, oldest month first, and reconcile every account until what’s in your books matches what actually happened.

Along the way I fix miscategorized transactions, clear out duplicates, chase down what’s missing, and flag anything that needs a decision from you. It starts from $250 per month of records, and the quote is confirmed after a free review of your books, so there’s no open-ended bill.

Catch-up & cleanup bookkeeping in Lethbridge

Where you are

  • Statements piling up, unopened
  • A QuickBooks file nobody trusts
  • Receipts in a shoebox (or a glovebox)
  • GST or payroll filings you’ve been avoiding

Where you’ll be

  • Every bank and credit card account reconciled
  • Clean categories you can actually read
  • Receipts matched and stored digitally
  • A clear list of anything still outstanding

Monthly bookkeeping

Once you’re caught up, monthly bookkeeping keeps you there. Every month I categorize your transactions, reconcile your bank and credit card accounts, enter your bills, and collect receipts through an app like Dext, so you’re not digging through email at year-end.

Then you get a profit & loss statement and a balance sheet with a short summary written in plain English: what came in, what went out, and anything worth a second look. No jargon, and no report you have to decode.

Payroll services

Paying people is the part you can’t get wrong. I run payroll monthly or bi-weekly from your timesheets, calculate CPP, EI and income tax deductions, prepare pay statements, and keep your CRA remittances on time. When someone leaves, I prepare the Record of Employment. At year-end, the T4s are ready before the deadline. Whether it’s your first hire or a seasonal crew, you’ll know exactly what each person costs you and what’s owed to the CRA.

Good to know

  • Most new employers remit source deductions by the 15th of the following month
  • Alberta vacation pay is 4% (6% after five years, and from day one in construction)
  • T4 slips are due the last day of February

GST filing

Alberta keeps sales tax simple: there’s the 5% federal GST and no PST. The filing still has to be right, though. I track the GST you’ve collected and the input tax credits you can claim, keep the receipts that back them up, and file your return on time for your reporting period, whether that’s monthly, quarterly or annual. Seasonal businesses should watch the threshold closely: it’s measured quarter by quarter, so one strong harvest-season quarter can be enough to require registration.

Good to know

  • Registration is required once you pass $30,000 in a quarter or over four quarters
  • Quarterly filers file and pay one month after the quarter ends
  • Annual filers who are sole proprietors with a December year-end file by June 15 and pay by April 30

Who I work with

I work with owner-operated businesses, usually with 1 to 10 people. Small businesses are most of Lethbridge: of the 3,836 businesses with employees in 2025, about 95% had fewer than 50 employees. I’ve kept books in every one of these industries.

Why work with me

“I don’t know.Let’s figure it out.”

You’ll hear me say that. I’d rather tell you honestly that I need to check something than guess with your money. Bookkeeping isn’t about sounding clever. It’s about being right, being on time, and being straight with you when you have a question.

I’m local, I’m the one doing your books, and I explain things in normal words. If you’ve ever nodded along to a financial conversation you didn’t follow, you won’t have to do that here.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    A free review

Tell me what’s going on: how far behind you are, what software you use, what’s keeping you up at night. We go over your books with no judgement and no obligation.

  2. Step 2

A clear quote, then we catch up

I’ll confirm your quote for the cleanup (from $250 per month of records), or set up QuickBooks Online properly if you’re starting fresh. Then I get your books current, oldest month first.

  3. Step 3

    Level, every month

Monthly bookkeeping keeps you there: reconciled accounts, filed returns and a plain-English summary in your inbox.

Lethbridge and southern Alberta

Most of my work happens remotely, so it doesn’t matter whether you run a shop in one of north Lethbridge’s industrial parks or work from a home office in West Lethbridge. Your books live securely in the cloud, and we talk by phone or video.

When it helps to sit down together, I can meet in person in and around Lethbridge. And because everything is online, I work with businesses anywhere in Canada too.

One local detail worth knowing: City of Lethbridge business licences run January 1 to December 31, so January is a good time to get your books, your licence and your T4 prep all squared away at once.

Your Lethbridge bookkeeper

I have 6+ years of bookkeeping experience. Before starting Level Bookkeeping, I kept full-cycle books for a roster of small businesses at a local bookkeeping firm, after years on the accounts payable and receivable side. Along the way I worked with plumbers, mechanics, truckers, salons, estheticians, property managers and holding companies.

The parts of the job I enjoy most are reconciliation and cleaning up messy books, which works out well, because that’s exactly where most owners need help.

Questions people ask

Something else on your mind? Ask me when you get in touch.

Do I need to be in Lethbridge to work with you?

No. Most of my work is remote, using QuickBooks Online and secure document sharing, so I can work with businesses anywhere in Canada. If you’re in or around Lethbridge, I can also visit in person when it helps.

How far behind can my books be?

There’s no such thing as too far behind. I start from your bank and credit card statements and work forward month by month. If statements or receipts are missing, I’ll tell you exactly what to request and from where.

How much does bookkeeping cost?

It depends on how many transactions you have, how many accounts there are to reconcile, and (for catch-up work) how far behind things are. Catch-up work starts from $250 per month of records and monthly bookkeeping from $300/month, both confirmed after a free review of your books. My pricing page explains how it works.

Do you only use QuickBooks Online?

QuickBooks Online is what I recommend and use most, and I’m Level 2 certified in it. I’ve also worked in QuickBooks Desktop, Sage, and plenty of Excel and Google Sheets. If you’d like to move to QuickBooks Online, I can set it up or migrate your existing records.

Do I have to charge GST in Alberta?

Alberta has the 5% federal GST and no provincial sales tax. You must register once your taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over the last four quarters, and you can register voluntarily before that. If you’re not sure where you stand, that’s a good thing to ask about when you get in touch.

Do you file my income taxes too?

I don’t prepare income tax returns. What I do is hand your tax preparer clean, reconciled books and a tidy year-end package, which makes their part easier. I do prepare and file GST returns (and PST returns for clients registered in a province that charges PST), payroll remittances and T4, T4A and T5018 slips.

How long do I need to keep my receipts?

The CRA generally requires you to keep business records for six years after the end of the tax year they relate to. Keeping them organized and matched to the transactions in your books makes them easy to find if the CRA ever asks, and receipt capture is part of my monthly package.

Let’s get your books level.

Tell me where things stand, even if it’s messy, and I’ll tell you honestly what it’ll take to catch up and keep it that way. Every quote is confirmed after a free review of your books.
