Level Bookkeeping

Bookkeeping services, from catch-up to year-end

Everything here is for small, owner-operated businesses, explained in plain English. A common path is to catch up first, stay current with monthly bookkeeping, and add the rest as you need it.

How the pieces fit together

You don’t need everything at once. A typical path looks like the one below, but you can join at any step. If your books are already in good shape, we can start straight at monthly bookkeeping.

  1. Step 1

    Catch up

Every account reconciled and every error fixed, so the starting point is solid.

  2. Step 2

    Set up

QuickBooks Online, bank feeds and receipt capture working the way your business does.

  3. Step 3

    Stay current

Monthly bookkeeping, with payroll and GST filed on schedule.

  4. Step 4

    Close the year

A tidy year-end package and slips, ready for your tax preparer.

Not sure where you fit? It usually becomes clear once you tell me where your books are. If your books are current and you just want them kept that way, we start with monthly bookkeeping. If they’re behind, we start with a catch-up project and quote it before any work begins.

Catch up: the usual starting point

Catch-up & cleanup bookkeeping

Books that are months or years behind, or full of errors, brought current and corrected. I reconcile every bank and credit card account from the oldest month forward, fix what I find, and give you a short list of anything still outstanding. Quoted as a project, so you know the cost first.

Every catch-up starts with a free review of your books, so you know what it involves, and what it costs, before anything begins.

Stay current

The monthly routine that keeps you level, with payroll and GST filed from the same reconciled books.

  • Monthly bookkeeping

Full-cycle bookkeeping every month: transactions categorized, accounts reconciled, bills entered and receipts matched. You get a profit & loss statement and balance sheet with a summary in plain English.

  • Payroll services

Pay runs with CPP, EI and income tax deducted, pay statements, CRA remittances on time, Records of Employment when someone leaves, and T4s before the end of February.

  • GST filing

Alberta’s 5% GST tracked, input tax credits claimed with the receipts to back them, and your return filed on time for your monthly, quarterly or annual period.

Add when you need them

Extras that fit around your bookkeeping, from one-time setups to year-end.

Year-end bookkeeping
The year closed, reconciled to the last day, and handed to your tax preparer as one organized package.
QuickBooks Online setup & migration
A clean QuickBooks Online file set up for how your business works, or a careful move from spreadsheets, QuickBooks Desktop or Sage.
T4, T4A & T5018 slips
The right year-end slip for every employee, contractor and subtrade, prepared from reconciled books and filed electronically.
Invoicing & accounts receivable
Invoices out on schedule, payments matched to them, and a monthly view of who still owes you.

Software I work with

QuickBooks Online is what I recommend and know best: I hold Intuit’s QuickBooks Online Certification Level 2. I’ve also worked in QuickBooks Desktop, Sage, Excel and Google Sheets, and with receipt apps: Dext is the one I use, and I can work with another if you already have one.
